Rudolph Valentino
I made a doll of Rudolph Valentino. The Sheik and the other in his matador Outfit.
Rudolph Valentino was a Silent Screen idol. Charismatic, Handsome and he shock the cinema with his animal magnetism.I was shocked too. My neighbor gave a video of the silent screen movie to watch..The Sheik. He was riding in a storm on his horse ,after love and music played in the back ground as he was running through the desert storm , whirling through sand and after love. I fell in Love.
My neighbor invited me to a ceremony that has been going on since he passed away 100 years ago.
This was at the Hollywood Cemetery. When I showed up I felt peace on these grounds where many Old Hollywood stars are now buried. There is a feeling of peace. I saw the best celebration of this actor.
For many years there was a women who showed up wearing Black and hide her identity.
No one knows her identity today. She always left a Rose for him every year.
Today there are twenty women wearing Black and honoring this silent film Star.I guess they fell in love with him too.
There was poetry and singing and showing films. This was magical.
I decided I will read everything about him . My neighbor had many books of Rudolph’s History and talked about his wife natasha who was a clothes designer.Back then an actor had to buy his own clothes. Rudolph was new to Hollywood. Natasha designed his clothes and knew the industry well. She was beside him through the end.She was his rock through his career.
I decided to make a doll of Rudolph Valentino to bring to the next ceremony, and wear BLACK.
When I showed up with my doll the next year I was the only women in Black.I looked around and wondered what happen to all the women wearing black I was the only one this year. What happen?
I hide my identity in honoring this tradition for 100 years.
There were a hand full friends who called my name and knew me. I floated around and of coarse all eyes were on me. Everyone was trying to get my name. Did the Studios hire you? Are you a relative?
I held on to my doll Rudolph and kept running from so many questions because I wanted to honer this mysteries women wearing Black for the last 100 years with no name and a rose.
Photographers everywhere.
I rested at one point and leaned up against a bench where everyone was facing the stage. I was directly behind them .I was standing trying to get my breathe. there were so many who were facing the stage just sitting and waiting.
A friend whispered to a her friend next to her. I was directly standing behind her. I had a ruskin hat on with a thin black veil over draping my to my shoulders.I hide my face.
The women sitting in front could feel my presence. She was turning her head slowly and when she turned around she looked up with her eyes widened like she couldn’t believe The mysteries Lady in Black was standing behind her in silence.
There continued to be silence and her eyes widened. I was floored too! I’m A hair designer and this was my Client sitting down in front of me.. So I lifted my viel and looked straight at her and she said,” Dahli !”
I said SHHH! I put my veil down again and continued holding on to my Rudolph Valentino doll and kept running from the Photographers taking pictures and asking a endless questions.
I ran through a open area and saw another building with many steps and pillars. I could feel all these photographers running after me.
When I arrived at the top of the stairs surrounded by pillars. I turned around and was only trying to gather my breath. The wind was strong and this was a overcast cloudy moody day. I saw below me many photographers more than thirty. They wanted this picture of the Mysteries lady in black on top of these stairs. At this moment ,I surrendered. I started reaching for the sky and dancing with my veil through the wind. All of a sudden this became natural to me. Looking back I could of been just fine being here much longer.
There was one photographer who I let close. I just had enough time and caught my breath to kiss my Rudolph Valentino doll .The Photographer captured this moment. Next thing I hear this is the front page of the Hollywood Reporter.
